This popped up in my memories today and as I read it, I realized how easy it is to forget. This short note is an excellent reminder to myself that Christ is the gift and that as long as my children know that, Christmas is well spent.
Go Light Your World
My church service yesterday was amazing. The songs they picked just really spoke to me. One in particular called “Go Light Your World.” It talks about loving each other and not being ashamed of who we are in Christ. Support those who can’t support themselves and loves those we don’t think deserve it. Forget the tinsel and glamour of what we now see as “Christmas.” Forget the pressure of finding “the perfect gift.” There is only one perfect gift, Christ.
The other song that really spoke to me was call “Labor of Love.” It’s literally talking about the birth of Christ and the labor of Mary. It paints an entirely different picture of what it was like for Mary to give birth when and where she did. The thing that stuck out most was that the artist calls her “little Mary.” How often do we think of Mary as an older, able to handle it, kind of woman. In reality she was probably younger than you or I. Probably 16, because in those days that was normal to be married and having babies by then. Now imagine a pregnant 16-year-old that is traveling far away from her family with her soon-to-be husband. Not hard to do is it? That was the mother of Christ. Given, Joseph wasn’t the father and it was holy conception, but can you imagined how terrified she was?
His birth was surrounded with the foreshadowing of His death. “He was wrapped in swaddling clothes” so were the bodies being placed in tombs. One of the wisemen brought Him myrrh, equivalent to our modern formaldehyde. It was used as a preservative for the dead. Even as He entered the world, His death surrounded Him.
It’s humbling to think of how our Christ came into this world and even more so to think of how He left. The joy of Christmas isn’t just that Christ was born, it’s that He died and was resurrected and lives! The joy of Christmas is that Christ lives.
GO LIGHT YOUR WORLD
So Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, deceived and poor
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
LABOR OF LOVE
It was a labor of pain
It was a cold sky above
But for the girl on the ground in the dark
With every beat of her beautiful heart
It was a labor of love
